The Benevolence ministry at MVC is best described as a journey together with others to admit our shared need of the benevolence of our Lord Jesus Christ and find ways to break out of misconceptions of what poverty really is, what the root causes of it may be and how to find biblical ways to alleviate it in our lives. We are learning how to “help without hurting” the dignity and self-worth of others and to distinguish whether “relief”, “rehabilitation” or “development” is the right approach. It becomes a process not so much of administering “hand-outs”, but a relational process of learning from each other how best to be set free of pride, self-centeredness, and a “God-complex” in ourselves and the tendency in those we are trying to help to let others fix their problems while they sit back and watch.
