Are You Plugged In?

Isaiah 5:1-7

Let me sing for my beloved

         my love-song concerning his vineyard:
     My beloved had a vineyard
         on a very fertile hill.
2     He dug it and cleared it of stones,
         and planted it with choice vines;
      he built a watchtower in the midst of it,
         and hewed out a wine vat in it;
      he expected it to yield grapes,
         but it yielded wild grapes.

3     And now, inhabitants of Jerusalem
         and people of Judah,
     judge between me
         and my vineyard.
4     What more was there to do for my vineyard
         that I have not done in it?
     When I expected it to yield grapes,
         why did it yield wild grapes?

5     And now I will tell you
         what I will do to my vineyard.
     I will remove its hedge,
         and it shall be devoured;
     I will break down its wall,
         and it shall be trampled down.
6     I will make it a waste;
         it shall not be pruned or hoed,
         and it shall be overgrown with briers and thorns;
     I will also command the clouds
         that they rain no rain upon it.

7     For the vineyard of the Lord of hosts
         is the house of Israel,
     and the people of Judah
         are his pleasant planting;
     he expected justice,
         but saw bloodshed;
     righteousness,
         but heard a cry!

Psalm 80:7-8, 14-17

7     Restore us, O God of hosts;
         let your face shine, that we may be saved.

8     You brought a vine out of Egypt;
         you drove out the nations and planted it.

14    Turn again, O God of hosts;
         look down from heaven, and see;
     have regard for this vine,
15       the stock that your right hand planted.
16    They have burned it with fire, they have cut it down;
         may they perish at the rebuke of your countenance.
17    But let your hand be upon the one at your right hand,
         the one whom you made strong for yourself.

John 15:1-17

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinegrower. 2 He removes every branch in me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit he prunes to make it bear more fruit. 3 You have already been cleansed by the word that I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing. 6 Whoever does not abide in me is thrown away like a branch and withers; such branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask for whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples. 9 As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. 11 I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete.

12 “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15 I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. 16 You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. 17 I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another.

Romans 11:17-20

17 But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, a wild olive shoot, were grafted in their place to share the rich root of the olive tree, 18 do not boast over the branches. If you do boast, remember that it is not you that support the root, but the root that supports you. 19 You will say, “Branches were broken off so that I might be grafted in.” 20 That is true. They were broken off because of their unbelief, but you stand only through faith. So do not become proud, but stand in awe.
